This week we have been out with one of our customers (Ohlson 8:8 sailboat) to do seatrials and prove our calculations on the electric inboard system 10.i powered by two 48-6800 batteries.
Our customer demanded a minimum range of 30Nm @4,5kn.
LWL: 7,3m
boat weigth: 3600kg
calculated range: 30,6Nm/4,5kn/2,0kW
against wind 3m/s: 26,6Nm/4,5kn/2,3kW
by the wind 3m/s: 40,8Nm/4,5kn/1,5kW
combined: 32,2Nm/4,5kn/1,9kW
*The boat was laying in over winter for at least five month without movement, location near Malmö/Sweden. it has not been high pressure cleaned or fresh painted before trials.
Our test results are not just matching but clearly exceeding the theoretical calculations provided by our tools. We could not ask for more and are happy that we can rely on high quality electric propulsion systems by WaterWorld Electronics to supply a sustainable maritime future!
We converted an Ohlson 8:8 sailboat to electric using a WaterWorld 10kW inboard motor, and the results exceeded expectations. The system was easy to install, exceptionally quiet, and provided excellent performance. Sea trials confirmed we even surpassed the estimated 30 nm range. Maneuverability improved significantly, and maintenance is now minimal. WaterWorld’s high-quality, plug-and-play system made the conversion smooth and hassle-free. Highly recommended!
Since 2023 we have had a 15+5Kw WaterWorld inboard motor in our historic Vechtzomp of 14m long (approx. 6.5ton). This engine is very reliable and easy to operate. We do approximately 250 sailings per year and the silent sailing is truly wonderful. For price reasons, we opted for lead-acid batteries at the time. However, lithium is a much better option and the additional cost is now not too bad.
I have been using the 20KW version in the baltic sea on my 34ft ketch since last year (2024) and it is just awesome! You get the silence of sailing while motoring, making trips on engine power more enjoyable than ever before.
Regeneration also works great: I am getting around 100-150 Watts at 5.5-6knots speed even with the inefficiencies due to the angle of the shaft drive system compared to the water flow!
We are very happy!
All came very well explained, boxes with labels, mounting plug and play and once running it was a pleasure!
No vibrations and with enough power and silence, sense of good balance between the Waterworld system and our boat.
Thank you!
After sailing 3500 miles from Kiel, Germany to Lofoten, Norway and back with a Vindö 40 with a 10 kW inboard engine, I can only say: it works perfectly!
In my Tartan 33, I installed and operated a 10kw direct drive and travelled over 2,000 miles over two years with it. One trip was 700 miles. The direct drive is extremely quiet and with the right propeller the air cooled motor simply does not overheat.
I have used WW motors with both 3rd party and the manufacturers batteries. 3rd party work just fine but additional victron shunt and misc equipment are needed to accurately read state of charge. With the WW batteries the communication with the display and understanding of state of charge is spot on. The added safety of turning the battery off and shutting power down before the terminal is great. For those interested in the safest battery on the market, this is the only choice. IP67, aluminum case, temperature sensors, its a great battery and the price is very competitive.
Other systems have standard, black and white displays and 3rd party equipment meshed together for system controls. At the same price point, WW offers, modern controls, intuitive full color display and an application to monitor the boat.
